As the capital of the republic of Mordovia, Saransk is located where the Saranka and Insar Riversconverge, in the Volga basin, about 650 kilometres east of Moscow. The bird depicted in the poster is the “bird of creation” in Mordovian mythology, a powerful and evocative figure, symbolizing nature and life itself. The bird and the football are decorated with the traditional Mordovian pattern representing the uniqueness of the local art and crafts. The football on the poster represents the important role of the World Cup for the people of the region.
The image of the Great Bird (mdM Ine Narmon’, mdE Ine Narmun’) is the
most archaic in Mordvinian mythology where she acts as the creator of the
world. Thus, she lays the Great World Egg (mdE Ine Al, mdM Otsiu Al), from
which the world appears. The Earth comes from the egg-yolk, while the sky
and the underground solidity emerge from the eggshell.
A similar motif, the creation of the world from an egg laid by a bird, is
typical in the cosmogony of other Finno-Ugric peoples: Finns, Estonians, Saami,
Komi (Myths 1994: 564). Likewise, in Mordvinian mythology, the Great Bird is
the original mother of some ethnoses and deities. According to a Mordvinian
myth, the forefathers of Erzians-Mordvinians, Russians and Chuvashs were
born from the three eggs of the Great Bird. Similarly, deities-patronesses of
fertility – Norovava (mdE), wind – Varmava (mdM, mdE), woods – Vir’ava (mdM,
mdE) were hatched out of three eggs laid by Ine Narmun’ (mdE) in the nest on
an unusual birch (Harva 1952: 141) which grew in the centre of the Earth.
Three branches of the birch formed the tree-top, and three forks – its root.
The birch was found by the Great Bird (God’s messenger) – Ine Narmon’ (mdM),
who built a nest in the tree-top, laid three eggs, hatched them, and out came
the three sisters-deities.
CREATION OF THE WORLD
Less known is the motif of the universal bird Ine Narmun’ (mdE
‘great bird’), who lays the world egg (mdE&M Ine al, mdM Oziu al).
The egg yolk turns into the round earth, the eggshell into heaven
and the underworld.

In traditional Mokshan mythology the world was created by Ińe Narmon (Great Bird), referred to in folklore as Akša Loksti (White Swan). The first thing Ińe Narmon created was water. Yakśarga (Duck) brought sand from the bottom of the sea and Ińe Narmon took the sand and with it formed the earth with Ińe Šufta (The Great Tree) on it. Ińe Narmonmade its nest on Ińe Šufta, which is usually referred to as Kelu (birch) in folklore. Akša Kal (White Sturgeon) carried the earth with the roots of Ińe Šufta on its back. Ińe Narmonhad three nestlings: Tsofks (Nightingale), Kuku (Cuckoo), and Ožarga (Skylark). Tsofks chose bushes and willows for his home, Kuku settled in the forest, and Ožarga went to the meadows. Another of the old deities mentioned in Mokshan folklore was Mešavane (Mother Bee). Since the Christianization of the Mokshans the Mokshan Supreme God has usually been called Värden Škai (Supreme Creator).
According to later legends the creation of the world went through several stages: first the Idemevs (Devil) was asked by the God to bring sand from the bottom of the great sea.Idemevs hid some sand in his mouth. When Värden Škai started creating the earth, this hidden sand started to grow in the mouth of Idemevs. He had to spit it out and thus chasms and mountains appeared on the previously level and beautiful earth. The first humans created by Värden Škai could live for 700–800 years and were giants 99 arshins (yards) tall. The underworld in Mokshan mythology was ruled by Mastoratia. The souls of heroes, clan elders and warriors slain in battle travelled after death to the emerald green isle ofUsiya, where they sat at a long table together with the great King Ťušťen drinking pure mead.
The Bennu is an ancient Egyptian deity linked with the sun, creation, and rebirth. It may have been the inspiration for the phoenix in Greek mythology.
According to Egyptian mythology, the Bennu was a self-created being said to have played a role in the creation of the world. It was said to be the ba of Ra and enabled the creative actions of Atum.[1] It was said to have flown over the waters of Nun that existed before creation, landing on a rock and issuing a call that determined the nature of creation. It was also a symbol of rebirth and was therefore associated with Osiris
“The winged OSIRIS-REx and its heron-like TAGSAM evoke attributes of Bennu, as does the egg shape of the asteroid itself.”
OSIRIS-REx will launch in 2016, rendezvous with Bennu in 2018, and take a sample in 2019.
